Previous research has been conducted to demonstrate the usefulness of LDA for different types of topic modeling assignments. In education, for example, LDA has been used to uncover topics for essay scoring purposes , implementing course recommendation systems (Apaza et al., 2014), and evaluating teachers (Moretti et al., 2015). However, to our knowledge, LDA has never been used to identify students’ errors and misconceptions for the purpose of creating distractors that could be used to create multiple-choice items. Therefore, the purpose of the study is to describe a method for creating distractor by identifying students’ misconceptions using the LDA topic modeling approach. Once clustered, these responses become the basis for creating plausible distractors.

Distractions make it difficult to pay attention to what you’re doing, which in turn makes it harder to commit facts to memory. Give yourself a leg up by turning off the notifications on your phone, temporarily blocking your favorite websites, or sticking to instrumental music while you study (so you’re not tempted to sing along!). Taking a break every 45 minutes or so will also help you stay focused. Your homeworks assignments, quizzes, handouts, daily notes, and classwork are all indicators of what your teacher thinks is important about the information and what might appear on the test.

Look for clue words that hint that certain option answers might be correct or incorrect.Absolute words like “never,” “always,” “every,” or “none” are rarely found in a correct option. Typically, students have less choice in the work contained in such portfolios as some consistency is needed for this type of assessment. For example, the writing portfolios that fourth and seventh graders are required to submit in Kentucky must contain a self-reflective statement and an example of three pieces of writing . Students do choose which of their pieces of writing in each type to include in the portfolio. The teacher may expect the answer “in a log cabin” but other correct answers are also “on Sinking Spring Farm”, “in Hardin County” or “in Kentucky”. All types of selected response items have a number of strengths and weaknesses. Many teachers find that moving around the classroom helps them observe more effectively because they can see more students from a variety of perspectives.

Obviously, in each situation other interpretations are possible that the immigrant students have poor English skills rather than mathematics skills, or that Jasmine may be hearing impaired.
